Also
splinted mail, a form of armor in which narrow plates ("splints") are fixed to a mesh ring surface in order to provide better protection. The edges of the splints are attached either by rings through the splints and the mail mesh, or as embedded splints in the mail. The splints are most commonly vertical. For the purposes of my game, splinted armor is popular in Russia and Central Asia, when heavy armor is worn.
The armor requires the wearing of
padded armor beneath the chain and splint frame, to prevent chafing and to provide armor for the backs of the legs, which the mail does not cover.
Splint mail provides a +6 armor class adjustment (lowers armor class by 6 points).
