Part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the Duchy of Burgenland is the largest division within the kingdom that does not share a border with the Ottoman Empire. Comparatively, Burgenland is pastoral and full of beauty, quite unlike the remainder of Royal Hungary.The duchy has a total area of 4.3 hexes, with a density of 8,043 persons per hex. It is bordered on the west by the Kingdom of the Hapsburgs (Styria & Lower Austria), on the northeast by the Principality of Nyatria and on the east by the Marches of Guns and the West Border. It has a population of 34,586.
History
Successively part of several entities that controlled Pannonia (including the Celts, Romans, Huns, Lombards and Avars), Burgenland's separate identity began under the Carolingian dynasty, when settlers from the duchy of Franconia migrated to the area following the battle of Augsburg in 955 A.D. A steady flow of migrants would expand into the wooded hills and mountains until the 15th century.During the period of dynastic struggles following the death of Istvan the Saint (St. Stephen I) in 1038, Burgenland became a battleground between Hungarian kings and Henry III, who was bent upon conquering Hungary. Following Henry's death in 1056, the border between Hungary and Germany was settled between the Holy Roman Empress Agnes of Poitou and the King of Hungary Andrew I. Burgenland at that time became a part of the Hungary.
Authority was shifted to the Habsburg authority in 1440 due to its being mortgaged by the Habsburg king of Hungary, Laszlo V (also Ladislas II Jagello the Posthumous) to pay debts. It would be reclaimed by Matthias Corvinus in 1477, only to mortgaged again by Ladislas II of Hungary (and Bohemia) in 1491. It would then remain in the possession of the Habsburg monarchy until after the defeat of Hungary by the Ottomans and the subsequent imposition of Habsburg authority over the tortured Hungarian kingdom. In 1647, the Duchy of Burgenland was granted by Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II to become part of Royal Hungary.
